Early damage assessment

Small chip, sensible next step.

A suitable repair can help restore strength and reduce the chance of damage spreading. Suitability depends on the chip’s size, depth, position and condition.

06

Clear expectations

Repair is intended to strengthen the damaged area; a small cosmetic mark may remain afterward.

Can it be repaired?

Size matters. Position matters too.

Small chips can often be considered for repair, but long cracks, edge damage, deep contamination or damage in a critical viewing area may require replacement. A photo is useful, but final suitability is confirmed by inspection.

Repair may suit

A spreading crack, edge damage, multiple impacts or damage that affects safety and visibility.

British Standard guidance

Repair zones and safe assessment.

BS AU 242b:2022 is the current BSI code of practice for repairing impact damage to laminated vehicle windscreens. It guides technicians on repairable damage, permitted positions, repair procedures and finished-repair assessment.

Premier Windscreens guide to repair zones. Final suitability is always confirmed by inspection.
Zone A

Directly ahead of the driver

This critical viewing area is centred on the steering wheel and is 400mm wide for cars and light commercial vehicles. Damage must fit within a 20mm-diameter circle to be considered for repair.

Zone B

The remaining swept area

Outside Zone A, suitable damage may be considered when it fits within a 40mm-diameter circle. Size alone does not guarantee that a repair is safe or appropriate.

ADAS area

Camera zones are excluded

Damage in glass that supports, or previously supported, an ADAS component is not repaired. Replacement and the appropriate ADAS calibration will normally be required.

Important: These measurements are a simplified customer guide. Damage type, depth, contamination, distance from the glass edge and the vehicle manufacturer's camera zone must also be assessed by a technician. Read the official BS AU 242b:2022 listing on BSI Knowledge.

Damage size guidance

How large can the damage be?

Under the current two-zone guidance, the maximum size considered for repair depends on where the impact sits. These limits are a starting point only: the damage type, depth, contamination, edge position and camera area must also be assessed.

20mm

Zone A

Damage directly ahead of the driver may be considered when it fits completely inside a 20mm-diameter circle.

40mm

Zone B

Across the remainder of the windscreen, suitable damage may be considered when it fits inside a 40mm-diameter circle.

<10mm

After repair

The finished repair must not interfere with the driver's view and should finish level with the surrounding glass.

Post-repair visibility: the finished result should be invisible or only just detectable, with any remaining visible repair less than 10mm across. Every repair is checked before the vehicle is returned.

From photo to repair

How stone chip repair works.

1

Clean and prepare

The damaged area is inspected, cleaned and dried so that contamination and moisture do not compromise the repair.

2

Inject clear resin

A specialist clear resin is introduced into suitable damage and cured to stabilise the affected area.

3

Inspect the finish

The finished repair is checked for a smooth surface and acceptable result. The impact point may remain visible.

What to expect

A repair strengthens the area—it may not disappear.

Windscreen repair is primarily a structural process designed to stabilise suitable damage and reduce the risk of spreading. The impact point can remain faintly visible, and cosmetic invisibility cannot be guaranteed.

Quick answers

Windscreen repair FAQs.

Can every windscreen chip be repaired?

No. Suitability depends on the size, depth, position and condition of the damage. Final suitability is confirmed by inspection.

Will the chip disappear completely?

Not necessarily. Repair is designed to stabilise suitable damage, but a small cosmetic mark can remain.

Can you repair a cracked windscreen?

Long or spreading cracks commonly require replacement. Send a clear photo and we will advise on the likely next step.

Can you repair the chip at my workplace?

Mobile repair may be available when the location, weather and working conditions are suitable.

Should I deal with a chip quickly?

Yes. Vibration, cold weather and sudden temperature changes can cause a chip to spread into a crack.

Is repair cheaper than replacement?

A suitable chip repair is generally less involved than replacing the windscreen, but the exact price depends on the damage and service location.
